African Amber Bark Incense — Sarcocaulon mossamedense

Warm and sweet, with notes of brown sugar, butter, vanilla, amber, and marshmallow. African Amber Bark is the fragrant, resinous outer bark of a desert succulent, collected in Namibia for use as incense.

Wild-harvested in Namibia

This selection is wild-harvested by Himba people in Namibia. After the plant dies of natural causes, its aromatic outer bark remains. The naturally curved pieces preserve the shape and texture of that resinous layer.

How to gently heat African Amber Bark

Use gentle, indirect heat. Do not light the bark or burn it directly.

We recommend Japanese incense charcoal in a heat-resistant incense bowl with white ash. Use a copper stand to support a mica plate above the charcoal, and place a small piece of bark on the plate.

Begin with more distance between the charcoal and mica plate, then adjust gradually to release the delicate scent without charring the bark. This indirect heating approach is inspired by Japanese incense appreciation.

Use in a well-ventilated area, keep the bowl on a heat-resistant surface, and never leave hot charcoal or heating incense unattended.
