Copal Amazonia — Protium heptaphyllum Breu Resin

Fresh, lightly lemony and piney, with a sweet, tropical character. Copal Amazonia is an aromatic Brazilian incense resin from Protium heptaphyllum, enjoyed as loose resin incense with gentle charcoal heating.

Wild-harvested in Brazil

This breu resin is wild-harvested by Kayapó people in Brazil, collected from the bark of old-growth trees in the Amazon. Its irregular pieces retain the natural character of whole tree resin.

Whole resin and its natural constituents

Protium heptaphyllum resin naturally contains aromatic terpenes and heavier triterpenes, including alpha- and beta-amyrin. Enjoy its fragrance on its own or explore it in your own incense blends.

How to gently heat copal with charcoal

For gentle heating, we recommend Japanese incense charcoal in a heat-resistant incense bowl with white ash. Use a copper stand to support a mica plate above the charcoal, and place a small piece of copal on the plate.

Begin with more distance between the charcoal and mica plate, then adjust gradually to explore the fragrance without charring the resin. This indirect heating approach is inspired by Japanese incense appreciation and gives you control over the warmth reaching the copal.

Follow the charcoal and burner's instructions. Use in a well-ventilated area, keep the bowl on a heat-resistant surface, and never leave hot charcoal or heating incense unattended.
